Yahoo! News - Critics Call Affleck, J Lo. Movie 'Gigli' a Turkey
If early reviews are anything to go by, the pairing of the real-life love birds in the movie "Gigli" looks set to bomb when it opens at the U.S. box office Friday.
Among its biggest problems is a love scene in which Lopez spreads her legs and tells a smoldering Affleck, "It's turkey time. Gobble, gobble."
"Witless, coarse, and vulgar, 'Gigli' is worse than its advance buzz could have indicated," wrote Fox News critic Roger Friedman. "The film -- if you can call it that -- is a total, mindless disaster."

McALLEN, Texas - A rare attempt to unionize by Roman Catholic workers in South Texas has resulted in a nasty dispute, with one priest leaving a parish where there have been daily protests outside the church.
Church employees from several parishes voted last year to form a union, and a priest at Holy Spirit Church responded by firing four of the workers in June. The workers got their jobs back through a court order, but were quickly put on paid leave.
"It was like an unfriendly takeover," said Ann Cass, pastoral associate coordinator of ministries and one of the fired workers, all of whom are parishioners at Holy Spirit. "The locks on the doors were changed, security guards were brought in. I've worked in this parish 22, 23 years, and we really felt violated."
Brownsville Bishop Raymundo J. Pena, whose diocese runs west from the Gulf of Mexico along the Mexican border and includes the parishes involved in the union spat, has adamantly denied having anything to do with the firings.
He will not talk to reporters directly, but has issued statements that suggest the conflict within the church goes beyond a labor dispute - to maverick parishioners who have promoted ideas such as women in the priesthood.
"This same group has picketed the ordination of our diocesan priests the last two years. On June 22, they were hurriedly removing the women's ordination signs from their banners and replacing them with the union signs," he wrote.
For three consecutive Sundays, dissidents at Holy Spirit held a simultaneous Mass outside the regular church service.

After a two-day strategy session in Virginia, 60 conservative Anglican leaders from around the world warned yesterday that there will be a "dramatic realignment" in their church if U.S. Episcopalians confirm a gay priest as bishop and approve ceremonies blessing same-sex couples.

The church leaders, including 15 U.S. bishops and five archbishops from foreign countries, met behind closed doors at Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax to try to devise a strategy for a looming confrontation over gay issues at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church July 30-Aug. 8 in Minneapolis.

To this end, I purchased six hundred pounds of foodstuffs from the corner grocery and locked myself in the kitchen, refusing to admit anyone. The question of whether or not to connect donors and their offspring has yet to be aggressively addressed by the sperm bank community at large, but the issue is increasingly relevant.

"The industry is self-regulated," said Alice Ruby, executive director of the Sperm Bank of California. "The American Society of Reproductive Medicine recommends no more than 25 children from the same donor for a population of 800,000."

In a city the size of New York that could mean 250 offspring from one donor.

The self-imposed limit at the Sperm Bank of California is 10 families per donor worldwide, with each family free to produce as many offspring as they like from that donor, according to Ruby. But that sperm bank — the only non-profit one in the U.S. — is more conservative than most.

One last thing on contraception
Awhile back we were discussing contraception, with Gene and others making the case that NFP is just as open to selfish use as contraception is. One thought I have had since that time but failed to blog is this: Try it. This option will not be open to the single doubters, however, I am convinced that if any sexually active person* tries to give up contraception in favor of NFP for 6 months (ideally at least 2 years, but that's too much to ask), the difference, and the difficulty of using NFP selfishly, will be obvious.

*If there's a single, sexually active person interested in NFP, I think nothing could be more educational than trying to persuade one's lover(s) to eliminate the use of condoms/pills.

And while we're at it, I hope everyone understands that pills cause early-stage abortions just like "emergency contraception" does. Trying to find a good link for you but gotta go.

Comments on an Article from Reproductive Biology Research Unit at the University of Saskatchewan*
Professor-Emeritus James B. Brown
M.Sc. Ph.D. D.Sc. F.R.A.C.O.G.

*Saskatchewan Study reported in Fertiltiy and Sterility July 6, 2003

Waves of anovulatory ovarian activity as described by the Saskatchewan study were documented by hormone assays and published in the scientific literature during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Their existence has been known to the Billings Ovulation Method for more than 40 years and rules have been developed to allow for it.

The woman observes patches of mucus associated with each wave of follicular activity and is taught to distinguish these patches from true ovulation, which is associated with a more definite increasing mucus pattern followed by the Peak symptom. This distinction is important because confusion between the two events could lead to mistakes in timing ovulation and this applies both to the avoidance and achievement of pregnancy.

Thus, the facts revealed in the Saskatchewan study are absolutely correct, we are grateful to the authors for reminding the world that the waves exist and we ask them to continue with their studies. There are more interesting phenomena to discover.

However, their interpretation that their findings indicate that fertile ovulations can occur more than once on different days during the menstrual cycle is grossly in error. From observing the millions of women using natural methods of family planning and from the daily study of approximately 10,000 ovarian cycles in a large spectrum of women we can state that once ovulation has occurred another ovulation cannot occur in the interval to the next menstrual bleed.

The Saskatchewan study confirmed this in that all the women released only one egg during the study cycle and the only two who appeared to ovulate more than once had abnormal (infertile) cycles. This is also our experience. The problem is to define the day of ovulation correctly and it should be stated that conception could not occur in such abnormal cycles and that they are an important cause of infertility.

The emphasis in the report on the assumed possibility that more than one fertile ovulation can occur on different days during a menstrual cycle reflects the unwarranted hostility of the authors, the Journal and the current official opinion to natural family planning. It also demonstrates that preconceived ideas obtained from assisted reproduction technology applied to infertile women are poor indicators of normal reproductive mechanisms compared with the study of normally fertile women using natural family planning.

Pro-life women shift to majority - The Washington Times: Nation/Politics
The balance between pro-choice women and women who say abortion should be outlawed or severely restricted is shifting toward the pro-life side, bumping that group into the majority in the debate over reproductive rights, according to a new national poll.
Fifty-one percent of women surveyed by the Center for the Advancement of Women said the government should prohibit abortion or limit it to extreme cases, such as rape, incest, or life-threatening complications.
The findings, with a 3 percent margin of error for the 1,000 women surveyed, tips the scale from the last sampling in 2001, when 45 percent of women sided against making abortion readily available or imposing only mild restrictions. Only 30 percent support making it generally available, down from 34 percent in 2001, the survey found.
The New York-based center that sponsored the survey is a nonpartisan advocacy group for pro-choice women's rights. The center's president, Faye Wattleton, headed the Planned Parenthood Federation of America for 14 years.

Gaffe-Prone Former Premier Infuriates Women
Jul 1, 8:56 AM (ET)
TOKYO (Reuters) - Former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, renowned for his propensity for gaffes, faced demands for an apology Tuesday after implying only women who bear children should be eligible for pensions.
'I think it is really strange to be told to use tax money to take care of women who haven't even had one child,' Mori told a discussion group.
'The real purpose of a welfare system is to look after women who have a lot of children, as a means of thanking them,' Kyodo news agency quoted Mori as saying last week during a politicians' panel discussion in front of an audience."
