Church Officials Preach At World Conference On Families
POSTED: 10:54 a.m. EST January 27, 2003
VATICAN CITY -- Pope John Paul II is warning against what he calls "inauthentic" versions of family, stressing that marriage between a man and woman is the only true basis for a family in God's eyes.
The pope made the comments after the conclusion of the Roman Catholic world conference on families in the Philippines, where church officials preached against divorce, abortion and gay marriage.
The pontiff, speaking from his studio window above St. Peter's Square, said a family that isn't based on traditional marriage is an inauthentic "caricature" that cannot offer humanity life, hope or a future.
